Foundation StageAt BISC, the Foundation Stage curriculum is based upon strong educational principles, ensuring children have a broad range of knowledge and skills for future progress through school and life.

The Early Years at BISC consists of two year groups, Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) for children aged 3-4 years and Foundation Stage 2 (FS2) for 4-5 years.
The Foundation Stage classrooms are situated within the main school building; they are big, with ample room to house all the equipment and facilities needed to ensure a vibrant, stimulating learning environment. All rooms have internal access to age appropriate washrooms as well as direct access to large, bespoke play areas. The Foundation Stage children also have access to a classroom specifically for Arabic lessons, a Music Room, a natural garden area for PE and an age appropriate Swimming Pool. These subjects are all given by qualified, specialist teachers.
Each Foundation Stage class has a UK qualified teacher, experienced in Early Years teaching, plus a bi-lingual, graduate level Teaching Assistant, as well as a dedicated classroom ‘nanny’. Both FS1 and FS2 playgrounds have trained supervisors to assist the Teachers and Teaching Assistants when the children use the garden. All the adults within the Early Years team at BISC receive annual Safeguarding training.
The Foundation Stage setting is designed to foster a sense of security, stability and pride in being a part of the BISC community. We are proud of our children and want them to feel pride in themselves, their school and their heritage, recognising their uniqueness, creativity and strengths. Our aim is to encourage positive attitudes, independence and high aspiration, ensuring every child knows the value they can add to society.
The Foundation Stage team welcomes input from parents and are in regular contact with them throughout their children’s Foundation Stage journey, both formally through parent/teacher scheduled meetings, written reports and weekly updates via Google Classroom as well as being available at the beginning and end of the school day for any queries.

In conjunction with the rest of the school the FS team intends for children to be ready, respectful and safe at all times.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework forms the basis of our curriculum. It is broad and balanced, comprising 7 areas of learning, divided into the 3 Prime areas, and 4 Specific areas, as shown in the diagram below. Each year the Foundation Stage staff plan a curriculum tailored to meet the needs and interests of their pupils. At the end of FS2 the children’s readiness for Year 1 is measured against the Early Learning Goals.
- Children are taught to be ready to meet and pursue challenges throughout their learning journey.
- Children are taught to be respectful of others and aware of the many differences that make each child unique.
- By forming positive relationships, as well as providing a stimulating environment, children are supported to feel safe in order to explore, manage risks and make good choices.

It is our goal that children leave the Foundation Stage confident and independent to ensure a smooth transition into Key Stage 1
