The British International School, Cairo (BISC) is seeking an experienced Deputy Head Primary (Academics) to join our leadership team.
Role Purpose
The Deputy Head of Academics is responsible for leading and driving excellence in teaching, learning, curriculum, assessment, and academic outcomes across the Junior School. The role works closely with the Head of Junior School to ensure high standards, consistency, and continuous improvement, while supporting and developing staff to deliver outstanding learning experiences for all pupils.
This post-holder will provide strategic academic leadership, promote high expectations, and ensure that the school’s academic vision is implemented effectively across all year groups.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Leadership:
· Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Junior School curriculum, ensuring progression, challenge, and coherence across year groups.
· Drive high-quality teaching and learning through evidence-informed practice and consistent expectations.
· Promote ambitious academic standards, including provision for Greater Depth, challenge for high attainers, and support for all learners to reach their full potential.
· Oversee planning, delivery, and review of schemes of work to ensure consistency and progression.
Assessment, Data, and Standards:
· Lead assessment and tracking systems to monitor pupil progress and attainment.
· Analyse academic data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for development.
· Work with teachers and leaders to implement targeted interventions and support strategies.
· Support staff in understanding and using data effectively to inform teaching and raise standards.
Teaching & Learning Quality Assurance:
· Lead monitoring of teaching and learning, including lesson observations, learning walks, book looks, and pupil voice.
· Provide high-quality feedback and coaching to staff to support professional growth.
· Ensure consistency in marking, feedback, and assessment practices across the Junior School.
Staff Development and Leadership:
· Support and develop middle leaders, including subject and phase leaders, to strengthen academic leadership.
· Contribute to the planning and delivery of high-quality CPD aligned with school priorities.
· Mentor and coach staff, including Early Career Teachers where appropriate.
· Foster a culture of collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement.
Curriculum Innovation and Enrichment:
· Lead curriculum innovation and ensure alignment with national and international best practice.
· Support the integration of cross-curricular learning, skills-based approaches, and enrichment opportunities.
· Ensure academic provision meets the needs of all learners, including SEND and EAL pupils, in collaboration with relevant leaders.
Strategic Leadership:
· Work closely with the Head of Junior School as part of the Senior Leadership Team.
· Contribute to whole-school strategic planning, self-evaluation, and school improvement priorities.
· Support inspection, accreditation, and quality assurance processes.
· Represent the Junior School professionally to parents and the wider school community when required.
Safeguarding:
· Uphold and promote the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
· Ensure that academic practices support pupil wellbeing, inclusion, and safety.
Person Specification
Essential:
· Qualified teacher status.
· At least 3 years of experience in a similar academic leadership role within primary education
· Strong understanding of the UK curriculum and assessment frameworks
· Proven experience of outstanding classroom practice.
· Leadership experience within a primary/junior school setting.
· Strong understanding of curriculum design, assessment, and data-driven improvement.
· Ability to inspire, support, and challenge staff to achieve high academic standards.
· Excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable:
· Experience in an international school or British curriculum setting.
· Experience of leading curriculum development or whole-school academic initiatives.
· Experience preparing for inspection or accreditation processes.
