STATEMENT OF THE PE
FACULTY
PE in schools is an attempt to offer involvement and
participation in sporting activities as a value that is worth
pursuing by a pupil because it may enrich his or quality of life and
become part of his/her preferred style of life. It provides access
and entry to a range of activities from which a pupil may select
particular activities because they enhance his/her life, widen
his/her perspectives and provide and opportunity to explore his/her
own potential. As such sport has long been a popular choice amongst
the pupil body at BISC.
The department is staffed by PE specialists who are fully
qualified to teach across the age range. A comprehensive programme
of sport is offered in accordance with the British national
curriculum. Sporting opportunities are extensively supplemented by
the extra-curricular activities which are on offer to pupils in both
the Junior and Senior School. The school has its own Astroturf space
and open play areas for Junior Sport. Other facilities that the
school has access to include an Olympic size pool, tennis courts,
running track, 2 football pitches and extensive field space for a
variety of other activities. Sports on offer are football, swimming,
gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, track and field, basketball and
badminton. Karate and Taekwondo are offered by specialist staff as
part of the after school activity programme.
PHILOSOPHY
The department believes in equality; all students must be encouraged
by staff regardless of ability. A positive attitude to sport is the
most important attitude to encourage. All students should be
encouraged to achieve their true potential whether it is in
curriculum PE or participating in international competitions.
Enjoyment is a keyword and a mature social attitude is to be
encouraged. At all times, a competitive attitude is encouraged but
this relates more to self-assessment and personal performance rather
than group responsibility. Activity, fair play and a positive
attitude to sportsmanship is stressed.
