Through science, we aim to engage and develop the natural sense of awe and wonder that children have about the world around them in all its diversity.Science teaching in the
Junior School is based on the British National Curriculum and covers four broad areas.
Experimental and Investigative Science
Life Processes and Living Things
Materials and their Properties
Physical Processes
These areas are taught as a topic, which is often linked to other areas of the curriculum. Children develop and extend their understanding of each topic through practical investigations, teacher directed activities and their own research. Children in all key stages are encouraged to relate topics to their experience of the everyday world; to question; to develop their own hypotheses; to make predictions and to conduct investigations leading to meaningful conclusions. Whenever possible, children are encouraged to pursue further investigations either at home or at school, and to share their results with the class.
Foundation Stage:
Science is covered on a conceptual basis throughout the year. Practical first-hand experience is vital and forms the basis for learning.
Key Stage 1:
Children cover various topics each academic year. The emphasis is on practical work, building on what each individual child has already learnt. We include the children's own ideas and interests in our planning.
Key Stage 2:
Throughout this key stage children will visit many of the topics introduced in the previous years bringing both depth and detail to their understanding. At the end of each topic the children will be formally assessed. The children will cover 6 topics each year, apart from Year 6 where they will cover 8 shorter topics alongside their revision lessons.
