The ethos here is
on ‘a healthy body means a health mind'. Pupils have four periods of
sport a week. One of these lessons is a movement class where the
pupils explore themes within gymnastics and dance. The second lesson
is a single games period where the students explore themes from
‘court’ games like basketball and netball. The third period is a
double games lesson. In this double period the pupils participate in
a wide range of sporting activities including swimming, athletics,
football and striking and fielding games. All lessons are with
specialist PE teachers.
Foundation
Stage
All
students in the Foundation Stage (3 to 5 years) begin building the
skills required to achieve the early learning goals specified in our
programme. They have opportunities for regular physical activity
indoors and outdoors, including lessons in the School swimming pool
and on the outdoor creative play equipment.
Key Stage 1
Children
throughout Key Stage 1 (those aged 5 to 7 years) build on their love
for movement, using it to explore their world. By watching,
listening and experimenting, they consolidate their skills, and
enjoy testing themselves in a variety of situations. Children
participate with others in a variety of activities such as games,
dance, gymnastics and swimming.
Key Stage 2
Students in
Key Stage 2 (7 to 11 years) are encouraged to use their creativity
in physical activity. They learn new skills, apply those skills in
different ways, and then link them to make sequences of movement.
Students develop an understanding of how to succeed in different
activities and learn how to evaluate their own success.
Students develop knowledge, skills and understanding through
participation in a variety of activities such as games, athletics,
dance, gymnastics and swimming.
Competitions
Pupils play a variety of competitive
sport against other schools in Cairo. These include football and
swimming. BISC also has an annual Sports Day for the following
separate groups;
-
Foundation Stage
-
Key Stage One
-
Key Stage Two
BISC has a series of ‘houses', each
with their distinctive name and house colour.
These Sports
Days are a feature of the School calendar in the Infant and Junior
Schools. These events aim to foster a love of sport and all children
in the Infant and Junior Schools participate.
A house
system operates in the Junior and Senior Schools, and sports events
are often held on an inter-house basis. Although House Cups are
awarded the emphasis is to promote participation rather than just
the competitive element of sport.
