The Curriculum Support Faculty
Curriculum Support at BISC
covers three areas:
Learning Support
– When students require assistance to access the BISC curriculum
English as a Second Language
– Where English is not the student’s first language
Gifted and Talented
– More able students
Learning Support
Access to Learning Support at
BISC is dependant on the needs of the child. Each student is
seen as an individual and when appropriate an individual plan of
action is developed and implemented with parental consultation.
In order to ensure appropriate support and maximise
opportunities for success, it is a priority for parents to
disclose relevant information (Cognitive assessments, Speech,
Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Hearing, Vision,
Counselling reports) during the enrolment process or if the
student is already a member of the BISC community, at the time
the parents receive the report / information from the
specialist.
Parent Partnership
BISC has regard for the Revised
Code of Practice and the Disability
Act 2001 when working with all
Learning Support students. Parents are included in any decisions
when Learning Support provision is being made for their child.
The school regards liaison with
parents as very important; it recognizes that parents play an
essential role in enabling challenged pupils to achieve their
potential. We acknowledge that parents often hold key
information about their child – and that usually they have a lot
of experience dealing with that child. We listen to their views
Junior School
Support is provided for all
children as the class teacher differentiates work and implements
strategies to assist all children to succeed. Class teaching
assistants and the Learning Support teaching assistant work
within classrooms to support teachers to make work accessible
for all children. The Learning Support teacher also works with
individual students or small groups of students with specific
learning difficulties to consolidate key skills. Individual
Education Plans are developed and implemented in consultation
with class teachers and parents for identified Learning Support
students.
Senior School
Support is provided for all
students as the subject teacher differentiates work and
implements strategies to assist all children to succeed. The
Learning Support teaching assistant works within identified
classrooms to support teachers and make work accessible for
individual learning support students. . Individual Education
Plans are developed and implemented in consultation with form
tutors, subject teachers and parents for identified Learning
Support students.
English as a Second Language
The ESL faculty provides support
for students who need help with their English and offers the
following services:

students’ ESL needs and planning a programme of curricular
support
-
Accompanying
students to lessons to increase their understanding of class
content and tasks
-
Delivering
separate ESL classes to small groups or individual students
-
Advising
students on English language issues connected to homework,
coursework or future studies
-

More Able Students

students at BISC. Their needs are met through differentiation of
class teaching. These students are monitored via the Gifted and
Talented register and where appropriate enrichment and extension
activities are organised.
