During their time in the Foundation Stage, children are introduced to a variety of different mark-making techniques. They are encouraged to use all of their senses in creating collages, paintings, drawings and 3D models. Observation skills are developed and children are encouraged to choose materials and techniques in order to express their own ideas. |

Self-portrait by Dima aged 4 years. Much work in the first term focuses on children’s developing perception of themselves. This portrait was painted after much close observation and discussion using a mirror.

Children are introduced to a variety of different techniques for making marks on paper. Mohamed aged 4 years 4 months used marbles rolled in paint to create this pattern. A high level of fine motor control was required for this.

Alexis (aged 5) painted his hands with 2 primary colours, then rubbed them together to make purple. He made a print of each colour to record his colour mixing.
